I'm often surprised at how much one man can either be loved or disliked so passionately by most Christians. I know many people who have been inspired by the message of hope that he preaches, and I also know many people who aren't so fond of his ministry.
Fans and Critics
The Fans
The people who enjoy his books/television ministry state that his messages are encouraging and inspiring. A majority of people that say positive things about him have either read his book(s) and/or watch his ministry on TV.
The Critics
The critics state that he has a tendency to be flaky, he's not firm enough, he's just out there tickling people's ears so he can make a few bucks. They would like to see him be a little more abrasive, more in your face.
A majority of people who criticize his ministry have often never read any of his books and have never seen more than about 3 minutes of his television ministry. In fact, most of what they tell me is that they have "heard" this or that about Joel Osteen.
Hearing Is Believing
I was often told growing up not to believe everything I hear. However, all of us do that to some extent. If every one of us always tried to evaluate everything for ourselves, we'd have no time to do anything else. We HAVE to believe people that we trust or we'd go crazy constantly trying uncover all of the facts.
So, what truly is the RIGHT THING to do in cases like this?
The Biblical Approach
For those of you who have read Samuel, you can quickly see that David has an extremely high level of respect for Saul, even though Saul is trying to kill him. Why have respect for this rotten leader? Because God anointed him and placed him into the position of being king.
David obviously DID NOT AGREE with everything Saul did. But this did not change the fact that David would not speak or do any evil toward Saul.
What I'm getting at here is that whether or not you agree with everything that Joel (or any other pastor) preaches, you and I are still to act in love and respect.
Calling Him into Accountability
So what if you and I really believe someone is wrong? There are times where we must call our pastoral leaders into accountability. However, this must be done right.
1) Pray! I have not had the boldness to ask this before; but how many people out there criticizing a ministry (such as Joel Osteen's) are actively praying for that minister? If you or I need to call someone into accountability, we must first pray for that person and also pray that God helps us examine our own motives.
2) Speak (or write)! After we have prayed, and we feel a strong conviction from God that we are to call this leader into accountability, we must deal with the person as directly as possible. For a local pastor, that means calling them up, and scheduling a time to meet with them. For someone a little less accessible, it may mean writing a letter to them.
This MUST BE DONE IN LOVE. It is easy to get self-righteous. Pray that you are able to approach this person in love.
Your Pastor Is a ^*$%!!
Let's face it, if someone came up to you and said, "I heard this and that about your pastor!" You ask this person where they got their information and if they've ever even heard your pastor speak. Come to find out, they've never been to your church, they go to another church down the road, and everything they know about your pastor is hearsay.
Obviously, you are going to be upset.
When we really look at this from an eternal perspective, Joel Osteen is just another pastor. Sure, he's on TV and is famous, but God really couldn't care less about fame. That is here today, gone tomorrow. Joel Osteen will have to stand before God the same as every other pastor here on this earth.
In Summary
Whether or not you agree with Joel Osteen is not really the issue. The issue is that we are to always act in love. When we gossip (yes, gossip!) about a ministry simply because of what we have heard, I believe that we are in danger of blaspheming the work of the Holy Spirit. I guarantee you that I can find something with which I don't agree in any ministry out there. It is extremely easy to criticize.
Whether it be Joel or any other pastor, to criticize a work of God based on hearsay, without even praying for them, is sin. All this brings about is division in the body of Christ.
Joel Osteen has been given one of the most amazing gifts of encouragement that I have ever seen. No, I don't agree with everything that he says; but I cannot deny that MILLIONS of people have been filled with hope by the work that God is doing through him. It is no wonder the enemy is trying so hard to bring division in the body of Christ against this ministry.
We have been called to act in love and unity. If our words and actions do not bring love and unity to the body, than we need to ask God for help. This obviously does not relate to just Joel Osteen, but also to any other pastor, friend, or family member we know.
May God fill you with his wisdom, discernment, and more than anything, His love.

Does God hate me?
This blog definitely goes in a completely different direction than anything else that I've written in here. But I figured, hey, why not....
The Epiphany
For several years, I struggled with insecurity. I not only didn't think much about myself, but I figured not very many other people did either. On top of that, I was pretty sure God wasn't too happy with me. I sinned a lot, I had struggles, I wasn't nearly perfect.
But then one day, I had a realization that slowly morphed me and began the change that is still going on today. I realized... God isn't mad at me.
It may seem rather trite, but it made all of the difference in the world. When I made a mistake or fell into sin, I no longer cowered in the corner, waiting for a lightning bolt from heaven that surely had my name on it.
Of course, further revelations followed that...If God isn't mad at me, then maybe he actually kind of likes me. Whoa, that's a strange thought. It took a couple of years before I could grasp that. But that thought led to others such as God doesn't just kind of like me, He's absolutely crazy about me. And He made me the way that I am...
The Creator of color
Let's look at that from a biblical perspective. God made man and woman, in His own image (Genesis 1:26-27). If you look at this passage closely, you see that he is talking about man and woman, and not just man, or a man. The noun used is plural.
What does that mean for us? Quite a bit, but we'll keep it simple for right now.
I look at it this way. You can take white light, run it through a prism, and get a multitude of colors. The colors come from the original source, the light, and not the prism. God has taken special parts of himself, and put those different parts into us. This applies in many different areas.
Man and Woman
Together, a man and woman represent the personality more so than just a man or just a woman ever could. Why is that? Because God has made us each with a divine set of characteristics.
So why didn't God just give us each everything to make us totally like him? Because he wants us to be humble and need each other. Once again, we are a reflection of him. God the Father, God the Son, God the Spirit, all work as one, in unison, together they make the Holy Trinity. The Trinity is a complex and fascinating thing, but I won't delve into that in this blog.
Man, woman, God...together we make a perfectly functional trinity.
I am made in His image
Going back to the top. God doesn't make mistakes, he made me just the way that I am. God loves my personality. Realizing this brought so much more self-esteem. Why would God love my personality? He made it, it is a reflection of a part of who He is.
Like the prism, our different personalities and tendencies are merely the different aspects of our wonderful, deep Creator. God obviously has no reason to hate himself, so why would he hate you?
I believe God is the perfect balance of all of the different personality and beauty that we see on this earth.
Pick up your head
Lift your head and smile. Know that God has made you exactly how He wants you. He's not mad at you. He's absolutely crazy about you. If God is angry at anyone, it's at the devil for convincing His children that their Father doesn't love them.
Does that mean that we don't need to change any? Does that mean we should keep going on as we are because, "Hey, God likes me just the way I am"? No and no. There's always room for improvement, but improvement comes so much easier when you know God's cheering for you.

Pitch correction aka Auto-Tune
Introduction
While I'm on the topic of VST's, I thought I'd touch on automated pitch correction. The most popular plug-in is Auto-Tune by Antares. There's an interesting story behind it as it was originally developed for science and research, and not music. It was to be used as a seismic data interpretation workstation algorithm while the developer was working for Exxon. You can read more about that here if you are interested.
Why Use It?
Today, there are a couple of programs out there that can turn the worst of singers into something tolerable. As I ventured into the VST world, I started looking for a free program that could do this for two primary reasons:
1. It is a lot easier to slap that effect on than to try to go through and correct one or two words in a track.
2. You can get some really fun sounding effects for the voice
Freebies
In the free world, the pickings seem to be pretty slim. I found two free plug-ins, I have links below to download both of them.
I have played around with both of them, and have found serious limitations. It could just be me, so feel free to comment if you have had better luck with these.
GSnap
I have been able to use this to get a fun processed sound on my voice. It definitely does not correct pitch though. I tested on a track where I went flat once and sharp once. It made no corrections. I will upload a song in which I use this plug-in as a vocal effect once the song is finished.
VisualVox
This seems like it might be a pretty good program if one can get it to work. It will not do more than 1:54 of a track and then it just cuts off. That obviously is a serious limitation. It is also more complicated than one might think. You can manually edit notes, but there's no reference points, so you have no idea where in the song you are. All you see is a graph with a bunch of lines. I also have had no luck with selecting a key for the song (for example, C Minor), and then telling it to do its magic automatically. And yes, I did read the manual for both of these.
Should It Be Used?
This is a hotly debated question that I won't get into too deeply. There are a lot of artists on both sides of the debate. I personally believe it becomes wrong when it is used as a crutch. If you don't have talent, then you shouldn't be in the music business. However, when you're recording in a professional music studio and you're paying hundreds of dollars an hour, it may be to your advantage to have the producer use pitch correction on a word or two throughout a song.
One thing I do know is that we will continue to see this used more and more. The music business is after all, a business.

VST Plug-ins
Introduction
This is a page that is meant to help out fellow home recorders with understanding VST's and other plug-ins a little bit better.
There are several types of plug-in formats (including RTAS, DXi, and VST). They are all basically the same thing, but not all recording software programs will read or understand all of them. Many purchased plugins will allow you to choose which extension you are going to use (Pro Tools uses RTAS exclusively, most other programs are able to read VST and some can do DXi as well).
Being that VST is the most common plug-in type, I will primarily deal with that format in this blog.
What's this VST/DXi/RTAS thing?
Plug-ins are little applications that need a host in order to work. For those of you who have done some recording, you've probably used a few plug-ins before without realizing it. Whenever you decide to lace your beautiful voice with reverb, that little window that pops up is a built-in reverb plugin. It just came pre-installed on your system.
Most modern recording software does a pretty good job working with VST plug-ins. Often times, your recording software will act as your host and sequencer. Plug-ins such as EZ Drummer require hosts that can act as a sequencer. See my blog on EZ Drummer.
Types
I am very new to the world of VST's, but I've found there are three main types of them:
These simply sound like or perhaps were inspired by actual instruments. There are quite a few very good, very realistic ones out there.
VST Effects
These range from reverb to crazy synth effects. You've probably used these at some point without realizing what they were.
VST MIDI Effects
I have less experience with these; but they are just as they sound. Effects you apply to MIDI tracks.
Hosts
As I mentioned, just about any modern recording software can act as a host whether you're using Cubase, Pro Tools, Cakewalk/Sonar, Audacity, Garage Band, etc.
I personally use Cakewalk Music Creator 3, which does a great job hosting VST's. It is also very cheap software. I recently acquired Sonar 7, which I am now trying to learn. I also use Cool Edit Pro 2.0 at times, but have found that program is not the best at running virtual instruments (VSTi's).
Summary
All in all, getting started with plug-ins is easy and free. Feel free to comment or shoot me an email if you have any questions about plugins. Some of the plugins that I use include:
Not free:
EZ Drummer ($150)
IK Multimedia's Miroslav Philharmonik ($400)
EastWest Quantum Leap Goliath ($415)
Recommended Free Plugins:
The DSK series (probably the best all-around free virtual instruments available)
The DVS series (great virtual instruments and effects)
The Modern series (probably the best free effects - it's like having thousands of dollars in an effects rack - all for free)
Majkens Chimera (my favorite synth, this thing is absolutely amazing and easy to use)
There are many other free ones that I use (probably about 50 or so); I just wanted to highlight some of my most commonly used plugins. Please let me know what your favorite(s) is/are.

EZ Drummer - what? how? should I bother?
So my first real blog will deal with EZdrummer. I found such little information on this before purchasing it, I'd like to make a few comments on it.
For those of you thinking about getting it, I say go for it...maybe...
It is quite a challenge if you are not already familiar with running plug-ins on your computer. But it is definitely worth the effort if you can do it.
Software Compatability
First things first...EZdrummer is not a "stand-alone" program. This means that you don't simply click on the EZdrummer icon on your desktop and start making beats. It is MIDI software that imports into your recording suite just like a VST plug-in. If you are like I was and have no idea what that means, please read my short post on VST plug-ins.
I personally use Cakewalk's Music Creator 3; which is probably one of the cheapest and most under-rated recording software programs out there. I have also heard it works well with Sony's Acid suite. The only programs I have had trouble getting it to work with are Cool Edit Pro 2.0 and Adobe Audition.
Hardware Needs
EZ Drummer is a heck of a system hog. You will need to have at least 512MB of memory; I would recommend a 1GB if you plan to run other plug-ins in addition to this one. Here are the spec's from their website:
A few things they do not mention needing:
One thing I found when I finally got EZ Drummer up and running: my sessions were always garbled, distorted sounding. It played back much slower when I loaded EZ Drummer. It honestly sounded quite awful. When I mixed down my audio, it sounded ok though. I wasn't 100% sure of what the solution was, but I figured the really old, crappy soundcard I had in my computer probably wasn't helping.
So, I splurged. I got the M-Audio DELTA 1010LT. This alone fixed my problems with all sound distortion issues I was having while recording. This card will set you back $200; but if you are serious about making good quality recordings, you will not regret this investment. Unlike the cheaper audio cards in the DELTA series (which would probably run EZ Drummer quite well), the 1010LT has two XLR inputs meaning you can plug a microphone or mixer directly into your soundcard.
How does it work?
Its got hundreds of beats pre-programmed into it. If you're like me though, you'll enjoy making your own custom beats, or simply tweaking the ones they have already made if you're stuck. Making your own takes a few minutes, but you can get the sound of a profressionally recorded drumset in your songs...its quite nice.
Summary
Overall, I would say getting EZ Drummer is definitely worth it. It caused my recordings to take a huge step in quality. I had been recording with acoustic drum parts, and I only had two decent microphones. Needless to say, my drums weren't as powerful as I wanted them to be.
It will require some time and work, and maybe a couple hundred extra bucks to get things flowing smoothly; but sometimes you simply get what you pay for. I focused a bit on the negative in this blog; but I wanted to touch on issues that I had while installing in hopes that it will help someone out there. Feel free to send me a message if you want help or have any comments. I'd love to hear about other software out there.

- A heck of a soundcard (if you come crying to them about it not working very well, they tell you to upgrade from you crappy onboard soundcard)
- MIDI capabilities with your soundcard
- A very good, fast processor (I'd recommend nothing less than a Pentium 4 processor)
- ASIO drivers (a very good, free ASIO driver can be found here). If you're not already using ASIO, go ahead and upgrade for free, it is well worth the five minutes even if you end up not using EZ Drummer.

First blog
My Blog
After years of being a non-conformist and refusing to blog, I now have my very own web log. The main purpose of this blog (at least as of January 10, 2009) will be to provide insight into things that I have learned. The focus will be on home recording studios. Occasionally, I may feel inclined to make a rant about something else. Subscribe if you dare.
A few things about me:
I am a musician and song-writer. I play guitar, drums, bass, banjo, auto-harp, keyboard, and MIDI (half joking). I am married and have two fuzzy, feline children. My awesome wife lets me buy cool, expensive gear.
I write songs and record them quite frequently. My homepage is Dizzy Kitty Records. I have a lot of my songs uploaded. If you are curious about what any of the gear below can do, check out my website.

I write songs and record them quite frequently. My homepage is Dizzy Kitty Records. I have a lot of my songs uploaded. If you are curious about what any of the gear below can do, check out my website.
