Omnipotence

We Christians like to throw around big words even though we sometimes don't even know the exact meaning.  Because a deepening of our understanding can lead to a deepening of our faith, I would like to tackle a few of these words.  Today's word: Omnipotence

It is the power to do all that is intrinsically possible, but not the intrinsically impossible.  So what does that mean?

The intrinsically impossible are non-entities, or nonsense that often follow the prefix "God can....." or "Can God....?"  When speaking of God as all-powerful, a Christian may find some confusing questions being presented such as "Can God make a rock so big he can't lift it?" or "Can God give someone free will and withhold the ability to make choices at the same time?"

They are self-contradictory statements that are meant to sound clever but are really nonsense.  As the author of Freakonomics stated: "There really are some questions that are not worth asking."

As CS Lewis states: It is impossible for God and man to "carry out both of two mutually exclusive alternatives; not because his power meets an obstacle, but because nonsense remains nonsense even when we talk it about God."

So, I suppose this has been more about what omnipotence isn't rather than what it is.  But maybe that's good place to start for a word that is all-encompassing.  Let me know your thoughts.
